Original Diablo is being remade in Diablo 3 by Blizzard

The biggest news from BlizzCon this past weekend turned out to be about a game that’s nearly 20 years old! Blizzard confirmed that it is currently remaking the original Diablo using the Diablo 3 engine.

“Darkening of Tristram” is the upcoming update for Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls that will contain the remake, and it will “send you back into the depths of the Cathedral,” as put by Blizzard’s Chief Development Officer Frank Pearce. Overall, it will deliver 16 levels and all four boss fights from the original game, and Blizzard is even programming in graphical filters designed to make it look grainy and pixelated, just for an extra retro effect.

It will be a proper old-school Diablo experience

The remake will be available for all current characters, but Pearce would prefer it if you started up a new one for this retro experience. Those who want the game will have to buy the Reaper of Souls expansion. The content will be free, but it won’t be accessible in the basic game.

Revisiting the original Diablo sounds like a blast

The original Diablo launched on Dec. 31, 1996, and I remember it very well. A friend of mine used to play it after school at his place, and I always felt like I was doing something wrong. I ended up renting the PlayStation port a few months later, but I didn’t get far when I realized it ate up over half of a memory card!

For as nostalgic as the original Diablo is though, it has nothing on Diablo 2. I wonder if Blizzard has any plans to dive back into the truest classic from the franchise.
