Operator of self-driving Google car sent to the hospital after accident

In case you needed a reminder as to why an autonomous future is necessary and important, look no further than this report filed by Google.

The search giant on Thursday released a report revealing one its self-driving cars was involved in an accident that sent the operator to the hospital.

After a brief investigation, it was discovered the driver of a commercial van was found to be at fault after running a red light and t-boning Google’s self-driving car. According to Google, the autonomous vehicle noticed the van barreling toward it and slammed on the brakes, but not in time to avoid a collision.

It’s unclear what caused the van to run the red light but it’s not far-fetched to think the driver may have been distracted. Whatever the cause, it underlines why autonomous technology could be a positive change for our roadways.

Of course, autonomous technology isn’t without its faults. Earlier this year, one of Google’s self-driving cars caused an accident by changing lanes into a bus. That accident resulted in no major injuries.

Meanwhile, a driver using Tesla’s prototype self-driving software was killed after he and the technology failed to avoid a truck that had turned into his path.

Self-driving technology still needs a lot of work before it makes a significant impact on our daily lives. Until that happens, it’s clear that human drivers are susceptible to mistakes, which is why working toward an autonomous future is so important.
