Nokia will launch new Android phones in early 2017

Nokia has today confirmed that it will return to the smartphone business in early 2017 with new Android-powered handsets. The company has joined forces with HMD Global, another Finnish firm, which has licensed the Nokia brand in a 10-year deal.

“Elegant simplicity. Trusted reliability. Lasting quality. We are unlocking new and extraordinary possibilities for billions of people,” reads the new smartphone section that was added to Nokia’s website today. “And we’re just getting started, with new smartphones coming in 2017.”

The new devices will be the first to carry the Nokia logo since the company’s hardware business was sold to Microsoft, and they will be sold alongside new Nokia-branded feature phones, according to a report from The Verge.

Nokia finally adopted Android just months before it reached a deal with Microsoft. It launched two affordable Android smartphones and an iPad mini clone called the Nokia N1 — but those were eventually killed off by Microsoft as the software giant focused on Lumia devices.

Nokia confirmed it would reenter the smartphone and tablet businesses back in May, and we expected its first devices to arrive before the end of the year. But it seems we’ll be waiting just a little while longer to find out what HMD’s handsets will bring to the table.
