Nintendo Switch could expand gaming’s audience, GameStop boss says

Everyone who has seen it loves the Nintendo Switch. The guy behind Skyrim and Fallout 4 called Nintendo’s demo the best he’s ever seen. EA is bringing big games to the system. Ubisoft, Square Enix, and Sega are all behind the system. Well, not everyone. Investors hate it because it’s not Pokémon GO. But video game retailer GameStop? They love it, too.

In an earnings call earlier this week, GameStop CEO Paul Raines spoke highly of the system.

“The Nintendo Switch, which I played at Nintendo a few weeks ago, we believe could be another game-changer that will expand the audience for gaming,” Raines said.

GameStop also said their metrics are showing good things in store for the hybrid console. 27 percent of GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards members who are aware of the system plan to buy it, and that that number is in line with the Xbox One at the same point in its life. Sure, those aren’t PlayStation 4 kinds of numbers, but the Xbox One, despite all its time behind the PlayStation 4 in sales, is doing better than the Wii U could hope for. GameStop is expecting those numbers to rise after Nintendo’s January 12 event where specifics like pricing are expected to be revealed.

Just about everyone in gaming seems to be bullish on the Switch, and having hard backing from one of gaming’s biggest retailers certainly isn’t a bad thing for the upcoming console. The Nintendo Switch is set for release in March 2017.
