Not that there is anything wrong with that, mind you. Platinum Games’ titles always turn out excellent, and NieR: Automata is destined to be in good company.
Platinum Games’ action outings always have this nice, clean “sheen” to them. Character models animated with the texture of fine silk, and no matter how ruined or barren their worlds are, the backgrounds have a crisp, clean, metallic feel to them, even in the heart of a forest or a desert.
The latest batch of 18 screenshots shows this pretty clearly, and while I think it looks great, the shots themselves don’t really look all that much like the series’ other games.
NieR and Drakengard never had this shine
The flip side of this is that NieR: Automata looks doesn’t look like the other games in its series. The original NieR had a unique look to it, but it wasn’t exactly a technical marvel with impressive backgrounds and this much busy artwork.
However, comparisons to Nier are nothing next to the most recent entry in the game’s parent series, Drakengard. That game also has an unusual art style, but the difference with it is the performance, which has trouble keeping up a frame rate with a screen housing nothing but an interactive box or two. Solid game, but poorly programmed.
If Platinum Games had developed Drakengard 3, I think NieR: Automata would have been the result. We might finally have the first game in the series that not only appeals to the core fanbase with its weird storytelling and questionable heroes, but one that can be enjoyed by those who like solid framerates and responsive controls.
NieR: Automata will be released for the PlayStation 4 and PC in 2017.
