Nest Camera feeds come to Android TV, soon Apple TV

Nest announced a big update to its Nest Camera application on Friday that’s focused on sharing video clips you’ve captured. It also announced that Android TV users can view their live feeds directly from their televisions. Apple TV support is coming soon, the company said.

The new mobile application lets you grab clips that have been recorded and then share them. The snippets are called “instaclips” and can be created so long as you have a recording and a subscription to Nest’s monthly recording service. If grandma drops a plate of turkey during Thanksgiving, for example, you might catch and share the hilarity through the Nest app. Nest has algorithms that will try to determine the start and end of the clip, but it’ll also let you do that manually.

“Once you’ve made a clip, you can share it in one of two ways: create a link to the video, or save the file directly to your camera roll,” Nest said. “From there you can easily share it on social media or send it in an email. Show off your fancy dinner. Text Mom the kids’ reaction to her present. Or send a new kind of holiday card.” You can see how this works in the video below.

I turn off my Nest cam when guests come over

I already know from experience that my guests don’t like knowing my Nest cams are on when they come over. It’s not so much a trust thing, but rather they don’t like the big brother “Todd’s recording me” kind of thing I have going on in my house. I usually turn off the Nest cam when I have guests over to alleviate that stress in the first place. I am excited about the Apple TV and Android TV integration, however. I usually watch TV upstairs and now I’ll be able to see what’s going on downstairs.

Oh, and the update also adds a feature that Android users have had for a while. If the Nest camera senses action, it’ll send iPhone users a snapshot of what’s going  on, right in their notification shade. I’ve always found this useful on Android and have wanted it on my iPhone, so I’m pretty pumped about this.
