While we were most excited about Microsoft’s new Surface Book i7 and Surface Studio on Wednesday, there’s plenty of love for the Surface Dial. It’s not just for Surface Studio, either; Microsoft has confirmed it will also support the Surface Book and Surface Pro 4.
The Surface Dial is a Bluetooth-powered puck that attaches to the Surface Studio’s display and provides useful radial menus. You turn it to interact with things like color palettes and brushes inside drawing apps, and developers will be able to create custom menus for it.
The Surface Dial also has some simpler uses, like the ability to adjust your PC’s volume and to navigate and pan around an image.
Microsoft said the Surface Dial will work with any Windows 10 PC, but with Surface Book and Surface Pro 4, it will have exactly the same functionality. The company is planning a firmware update for these devices that will allow the Dial to be attached to their displays, too.
No release date yet
There’s no specific time frame for the update just yet, according to The Verge — though Microsoft’s head of Windows and devices, Terry Myerson, promises it will be available early next year.
