New details on the G6, LG’s next flagship smartphone, are starting to come to surface. The latest reports suggest LG is going to outfit the back of the phone with a glass panel and support for wireless charging, the latter of which was removed from last year’s flagship G5 smartphone. Neither are unique features, indeed, Samsung offers both on its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones, in addition to its older Galaxy S6-series devices.
The newest rumor comes from ETNews, which said the smartphone will also offer a 2.5D glass front panel. Sounds like it’s looking like an entirely glass phone, which is a nice bump forward for LG. The company used plastic until last year, when it moved to a metal LG G5 (pictured above). That device was solid though overshadowed by the much better looking Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Perhaps LG is taking a page out of Samsung’s book in hopes it’ll increase sales of its 2017 flagship.
LG G6 water resistance
ETNews briefly mentions water resistance, too, but it’s unclear if the news outlet is referring to the LG G6 or whether it’s just reflecting on features expected in new flagships. LG hasn’t yet adopted water-resistance in a flagship smartphone, but it’ll certainly face headwinds if it doesn’t do so this year. Most flagships, save for the Google Pixel and HTC 10, are IP68 water-resistant now.
LG typically unveils its new flagship devices during Mobile World Congress in late February. Maybe we’ll be treated to an early unveil during CES next week, if we’re lucky.
