Live video is coming to Instagram, CEO Kevin Systrom confirmed, although it’s unclear how the feature will work or when it will launch. The news comes months after the arrival of Instagram Stories, the company’s Snapchat clone.
“Live is really exciting for us,” Systrom told the Financial Times. “I think it can enhance what we’re doing. If I’m trying to strengthen relationships with someone I love, them streaming video to me live would be an amazing way to be closer to them.”
The way Systrom describes it makes it sound like the feature will be baked into Instagram’s direct messages component. If a one-on-one experience is what you’re after, there are plenty of options already on the market, including Duo and FaceTime.
If Instagram makes live video a larger part of the platform, which I think it will, then you’ll be able to live stream video to your followers whenever and wherever. Facebook, the massive social network that acquired Instagram for $1 billion, already has a massively popular live component. Adding a similar feature to Instagram will only grow its reach.
How will it work?
Will these live videos show up in your feed? According to people who have seen the live feature in action, live streams will appear at the top in red.
Instagram boasts over 500 million monthly active users, so the social network has a massive user base at its disposal. If Systrom is publicly talking about the upcoming feature, chances are it’ll roll out soon. Perhaps before the New Year?
