Huawei building its own Siri competitor

It’s a hair of a surprising move, especially since Huawei announced at CES 2017 that it will soon bring an update to the new Huawei Mate 9 that delivers Amazon Alexa support. It will be the first smartphone to offer Alexa out of the box. Huawei has huge aspirations, though. Bloomberg, which broke the news, said Huawei has more than 100 engineers working on the project.

China only?

It’s unclear what sort of functions Huawei’s assistant will offer, or if it will ever launch in the US. Huawei is still a much bigger player in its home country of China, as opposed to here in the US, though it has made huge strides here in recent years. Perhaps it will keep Alexa as its US-focused voice assistant.

This sort of tech takes time to build, more than a year by my guess, but with more than 100 people on the project, Huawei might be trying to get its solution to the market sooner than later.
