How to return the Galaxy Note 7… again

If you own a Galaxy Note 7, it’s time to take it back to the carrier. We recommend getting rid of the device, even if it’s a replacement, as soon as possible. Samsung is making matters a bit confusing — just read this email obtained by The Verge for a taste — but you don’t have to interact with Samsung at all.

If you live in the United States, all of the major carriers including ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon are now allowing customers to take the devices back into retail locations for an exchange. All you need to do is box up the phone with all of its accessories and take it to the store. Since there aren’t unlocked phones sold here, you actually don’t have to interact with Samsung at all.

In my case with ATT, I just said I no longer wanted the phone and was worried it would catch fire. My store gave me a full refund. That might vary by carrier, so it’s possible you’ll need to swap out for another device on the shelf.

The good news is that once you’ve turned it over to the carrier, the Galaxy Note 7 is no longer your concern. If you still want to use Gear VR or other Samsung products, I recommend picking up the Galaxy S7 Edge. Otherwise, the choice is yours.
