How to get Android 7.1 features right now

Tomorrow, during Google’s press event, we should learn a bit more about how Android 7.1 Nougat works on its new Google Pixel smartphones. You don’t need to wait for those devices to get a taste of what Android 7.1 is like, though. Action Launcher, a third-party launcher for Android devices, already has several features thanks to a feature called “Quickcuts.”

All you need to do is head to the Google Play Store and install the latest version of Action Launcher. It includes some of the features in Android 7.1, according to Action Launcher developer Chris Lacy.

“Android 7.1 will seemingly see the introduction of “Launcher Shortcuts” to Android,” Lacy said on Google+. “As luck would have it, many of the hooks required to use these shortcuts already exist in the latest versions of Google’s apps, and as of today’s Action Launcher update, you can use these shortcuts in current versions of Android.” Lacy warns that the Quickcuts API isn’t announced yet, though, so they only work with some of Google’s applications, like the Google Play Store apps and Google Photos.

Lacy said that he added “every one of the Pixel Launcher’s known features” into Action Launcher, which means you’ll get a shot at trying most of them before they’re even announced tomorrow. This includes the “Google pill” search bar at the top of the screen.

Check out Action Launcher on your Android device – it’s one of my favorite Android launchers, despite the early features that were just introduced.
