Gravity Rush 2 delayed into next year – Can anything save 2016 now?

In a holiday season that’s already struggling with major AAA releases, 2016 has just lost another promising title. Sony has confirmed that its PlayStation 4 action game Gravity Rush 2 will be missing its promised release date and that it has been pushed into 2017.

Originally, the game was scheduled for release on Dec. 2. In an update on PlayStation Blog, Director Keiichiro Toyama apologized but offered no explanation for the delay.

Gravity Rush 2 is the conclusion of Kat’s journey, so we want players to have enough time to dive deep into her story. In addition, as a lot of work went into online features that allow for asynchronous player interaction, we want as many people as possible playing the title at the same time. Thus, after careful deliberation, we have decided to change the release date. Gravity Rush 2 will now launch on January 20, 2017.

Either Sony doesn’t think the game is ready or it doesn’t want to get wiped out by Final Fantasy XV, which I think shares a large overlap of fans. Probably a little bit of both. Either way, Sony is offering a free DLC pack to make up for the delay.

Originally, I was happy whenever a game saw a delay into next year because my spare time felt a little relief with each instance. However, it has happened so often now that I am starting to wonder if there will be anything I want to pick up for consoles this holiday season. Square Enix has me all set with Final Fantasy XV, Dragon Quest Builders, and World of Final Fantasy. Only one of those can really be considered a big release, though, and the other two I’ll be playing on my Vita.

The AAA scene otherwise is now leaning entirely on shooters.

2016 started out promising enough, but so many titles have fled. Gravity Rush 2 is hopefully the last of them, or else I’m going to burn out on indie and retro titles until the end of January. Gravity Rush 2 will be released on Jan. 20, 2017. Save us, Noctis!
