Google will reportedly unveil the first Google Daydream virtual reality headset during its press conference in San Francisco today. The company is also expected to reveal two new smartphones, the Pixel and Pixel XL, in addition to several other products. Daydream was first unveiled back in May as a new virtual reality platform that will take advantage of Android smartphones.
Variety said it learned of Google’s intentions recently, noting that the Daydream headset will cost $79. The news outlet said that, unlike the Gear VR, the headset will require a separate controller for interaction instead of relying on a on the actual VR unit. The device will reportedly work with Google’s new phones, though typically VR works best with higher resolution screens, making the Quad HD display on the Pixel XL more desirable if you plan to use Google Daydream.
Variety said the first Google Daydream headset may be available to consumers as soon as this month.
Google’s event kicks off at 9 a.m. Pacific, when we’ll learn more.
