Some of the most compelling features of the Google Pixel, including Google Assistant, will not be made available to other devices through a future software update to Android 7.1 Nougat.
After some digging, Android Police found that Google Assistant wasn’t in the code for the standard release of Android 7.1 that’s bound for Google’s Nexus devices. TechCrunch confirmed with Google that the feature is, indeed, only available on Pixel smartphones. That also applies to unlimited full-resolution video and photo uploads, quick-switch software for moving from iOS devices, Smartburst and Sensor Hub.
The worst offense here is certainly the lack of Google Assistant support in other versions of Android. It’s a major new AI feature that will help the platform compete better against Siri. Google very clearly has big plans for these new Pixel devices, and the exclusive features are clearly going to play a big role in getting them off the ground.
