Gear VR disabled on Galaxy Note 7

Word broke loose this morning that Samsung is halting production of the Galaxy Note 7. That followed news last night in which Samsung asked customers to power down their devices and exchange them for different smartphones. As if the dangers of the smartphone wasn’t enough to deter you from using it, now features are being deactivated

According to a user on Reddit named Bahaman23, Oculus is sending a patch to Galaxy Note 7 smartphones that deactivates Gear VR. “Until further notice, Note 7 devices will not be compatible with Gear VR,” the message reads. The focus is on safety, Oculus said.

The good news is you can still use Gear VR, even the new headset, with Samsung’s other devices. Just trade in your Galaxy Note 7 for a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge, and you’re as good as ever.

Why this matters:

Gear VR, at least in my personal experience, really pushes the boundaries of Galaxy smartphones, and units usually get pretty hot while using the headset. Oculus probably wants to make sure Galaxy Note 7 smartphones aren’t catching fire while folks are using VR.

Gear VR was one of the highlight features of the Galaxy Note 7. Samsung even introduced a brand new Gear VR headset during the launch. Oculus is clearly trying to cover its own butt; why allow these fires to kill two brands at the same time?

We don’t know of any Galaxy Note 7 units catching fire while in use with Gear VR, but given the strain that puts on a smartphone, it seems possible it was only going to be a matter of time before that happened.

Plus, we applaud Oculus for giving Note 7 owners another reason to swap their smartphones out for a safer device.
