Galaxy S8 to offer new camera and enhanced AI, says Samsung

Samsung is counting on the Galaxy S8 to turn its smartphone business around following the failure of the Galaxy Note 7. To make the device as attractive as possible, it will give it a “sleek” new design, a better camera, and enhanced AI, according to one Samsung exec.

Lee Jae-yong has promised Samsung will carry out a “thorough” and “open” investigation into the Note 7’s exploding battery issue, while another Samsung chief has already promised that the company will provide fans with answers from that by the end of the year.

But this isn’t Samsung’s only focus right now. The South Korean company is also hard at work trying to make the Galaxy S8 the best it can be in the hope that it will offset the losses suffered with the Note 7. Samsung this week reported a 96 percent decline in year-to-year profit.

“We are expecting some difficulties until the first quarter of 2017, but we will achieve a business turnaround with the release of our new flagship smartphone,” said Lee Kyeong-tae, Samsung vice president for mobile, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Lee also promised the Galaxy S8 will feature a “slick design and an improved camera, as well as an enhanced artificial-intelligence service.” It’s not yet clear whether this includes the Viv technology Samsung acquired earlier this month.

In the meantime, Samsung is making efforts to boost Galaxy S7 sales. We’re yet to see big discounts on the device, but we have seen new color options — including the Coral Blue that proved to be so popular among early Note 7 adopter.

Samsung’s big battery problem

The problem Samsung faces right now is that it still cannot solve the Note 7’s problems. It doesn’t yet know for sure what caused some handsets to overheat and explode, and there’s a worry that unless it finds an answer, the same issue could affect the Galaxy S8.

Nevertheless, Lee and Samsung are confident for now that the Galaxy S8 will be a success. The device is expected to make its official debut at Mobile World Congress next February.
