I don’t think it would surprise anybody to find out that Square Enix made an enormous video game with Final Fantasy XV. However, the actual size of the game itself is what may shock fans and those who don’t have expanded memory for their consoles.
The pre-loader for Final Fantasy XV is available now in Japan, and while the PlayStation Store only mentions it being 40.5 GB, players who have downloaded it are reporting that it clocks in at a hefty 50.698 GB. The Xbox One version is even bigger at 50.94 GB!
The file does come with the day-1 “Crown” patch already installed as well, so that could account for some of the discrepancies between the actual size and the listing size.
One of the largest video games on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
At 50.698 GB, the file size makes Final Fantasy XV one of the largest video games on the current generation consoles, and it is perhaps the single biggest single release when not accounting for Ultimate Editions and bundles. Bordering on 51 GB is absolutely enormous for a video game, but it’s not like this is anything new for Square Enix.
I remember the PSOne days, back when a single Final Fantasy game took take up anywhere from three to four discs. Those who thought Square Enix had learned a bit of subtlety leading into Final Fantasy XV were sorely mistaken. When it comes to production value, Square Enix never settles for second place, especially with Final Fantasy. It’s been that way for the last 30 years!
Final Fantasy XV launches for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Nov. 29.
