Facebook adds Pac-Man, Galaga, and other classics to Messenger

Facebook Messenger is the last place I thought I’d see Pac-Man. And, yet, the platform now lets users play the classic arcade game right inside of the app. If that wasn’t enough, you can also play the game—and 16 others—right from your Facebook News Feed.

The new feature is part of Facebook’s “Instant Games” initiative, an HTML5 gaming platform that lets users play games without needing to download anything extra. The service will initially be available as a closed beta, offering a mix of 17 classic and contemporary games, including Space Invaders and Words With Friends.

Instant Games will be cross-platform at launch, meaning you can play with anyone on the web or mobile. And you can play with as many friends as one want, too. Facebook will keep score, giving friends and family another thing to argue about over the platform.

In Messenger, you’ll see a new controller icon that will bring up the gaming menu, and on the web there will be an entire section dedicated to Instant Games. Facebook’s video best demonstrates how the new platform works. It’s simple and straight-forward, and will likely see people spending a lot more time inside Facebook’s ecosystem, which is the point.

Challenge your friends to a game of Pac-Man

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen games inside of Messenger. Earlier this year, as part of March Madness, the social network hid a basketball game inside of the platform, apparently a sign of things to come.
