Apple is going to open a new research and development center in China, with completion expected by the end of this year, according to DigiTimes. China has become an increasingly important battleground for Apple, where it hopes to increase its mobile market share and get its computers in more hands of the public.
DigiTimes said the RD center is located in Zhongguancun Science Park in Beijing and will employ about 500 people to start. The center is reportedly “focusing on the development of computer software and hardware products, communication, audio and video devices, as well as advanced technologies for consumer electronics products and the information industry,” DigiTimes said.
Apple has RD centers around the world. A larger presence in China may not only make it easier for the company to interact with manufacturing partners in the area, but may also show the government, which doesn’t always trust Apple, that it plans to take positive steps to expand its day-to-day operations within the country, too.
