Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night’s Wii U port could be in jeopardy

When Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was delayed into 2018, the obvious question that came to many minds is “What’s going to happen to the Wii U version?” Clearly, by 2018, Nintendo will have dropped support for the flailing console, and most Nintendo fans will have an entire year of experience on the NX under their belts.

Nobody is going to be playing a Wii U in 2018, unless it’s to play something that’s not backwards compatible, and who knows? Maybe the same is true for the Vita, where the game is also due for release. For this, Director Koji Igarashi has this to say in an interview with IGN.

Yeah, it’s a very complicated problem. The reality is this: As timelines move on, certain pieces of hardware become irrelevant. Sometimes new pieces of hardware come out that make you think about what is the right strategy. And as a creator, usually you want to make stuff for the new hardware. That’s the reality.

However, this was a game that was backed by people, and we made promises to listen to them. They’re the people that gave us life so to speak. Any sort of change that we do or are considering that goes outside the scope of the promises we’ve made must be done with lots of explanation, must be done with lots of care, and must be done with lots of back and forth with them to see what options we have. We must listen to them at the end of the day, and we have made promises.

I would say that the most obvious solution is to cancel the Wii U port and swap over to the NX. Maybe it’s not that simple, but that would be my definitive version if the rumors of the NX’s portability pan out. I’m sure a majority of those who had the money to back the game will have moved on to the NX at that point anyway.

As for the Vita, well, maybe Japan will keep the blood flowing through the aged platform. Square Enix is trying its hardest this year with World of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Builders. Maybe there is some hope another year will drag out its lifespan.

For now, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night will be released in 2018 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, PS Vita, and PC. Igarashi recently struck up a deal that will allow the game to be published by 505 Games.
