Will we ever see a WarCraft IV? Maybe. It sounds like Blizzard wants to do it, but their resources are piled elsewhere.
In the upcoming issue of Game Informer, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime was asked about the future of the WarCraft series. Not the World of part of WarCraft, but the numbered RTS classics.
Specifically, will we see a WarCraft IV?
Here’s his response, as transcribed by PCGamesN.
“We love RTS games but right now our focus is still continuing to evolve StarCraft II – and to the extent that MOBA games are RTS – continue supporting and evolving Heroes of the Storm. I love that there is so much passion and interest around Warcraft IV. I would love to see Warcraft IV at some point in the future, but that is not our current focus.”
Making an RTS like WarCraft IV won’t be simple
Blizzard is a big company. One would think they could allocate some resources to WarCraft IV in order to get it going and out to fans. And, yeah, maybe. If they were any other developer, that might actually happen.
Blizzard, though? Not yet.
This company is known for taking their sweet time with products and focusing on them intensely. They’re currently working on Diablo III, World of Warcraft, Starcraft II, Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone and, my personal favorite, Overwatch.
They can’t simply make WarCraft IV happen.
It’s great to hear that a sequel is something the studio wants. That, to me, says that it will happen some day. I’ll be waiting. Until then? Job’s done.
