Battleborn going F2P denied, but plans to do a trial version in the works

Battleborn, by most accounts of those who’ve played the game, is a fairly solid team shooter with MOBA elements. Unfortunately for Gearbox and 2K, the game launched alongside Overwatch.

Now, the two titles are wildly different. Their art styles, multiplayer nature and hero system are similar, yes, but the two are far, far, far apart in terms of play. In spite of that, comparisons were made and Overwatch wound up with the lion’s share of sales.

Flash-forward a few months to yesterday, and Kotaku ran a story about a rumor they’d heard from an anonymous source. According to their source, Battleborn was set to transition to a free-to-play model with some DLC elements locked behind paywalls. The change would come very soon.

That’s been denied by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford on Twitter. He called the rumor a “reckless story,” and went on to clarify that there are some loose plans for a trial version of the game. Here are the tweets.

Does “trial” imply timed? No.

Sort of sounds like free-to-play with paywall DLC elements to me, but whatever.

We’ll wait for more strong rumors or official clarification.

What do you think about the notion of Battleborn transitioning away from its current retail model in any shape or form?
