ASUS just took the wraps off of the ZenFone 3 Zoom during its press conference at CES 2017. It’s the company’s latest Android smartphone and joins other products in the family including the ZenFone 3, the ZenFone 3 Ultra, the ZenFone 3 Deluxe and the ZenFone 3 Laser.
The ZenFone 3 Zoom features a camera with 12x zoom, allowing users to get close to subjects that are in the distance, in addition to a 12-megapixel secondary camera lens. It also sports a massive 5,000mAh battery that should get most folks well into a second day of battery life, if not more.
Asus says the camera sports Sony IMX 362 sensor with a f/1.7 aperture and the company’s SuperPixel technology. Combine with the company’s upgrade TriTech auto-focus system, users should be able to get great shots of action, still subjects, and more. The device also sports RAW and a “professional manual mode,” the latter of which has become commonplace in many of today’s flagship devices.
The camera is also supposed to be the leader in low-light conditions; the company said the ZenFone 3 Zoom’s camera is much more sensitive to light than the iPhone 7 Plus, a device that many consumers hold as the gold standard.
The front-facing camera, meanwhile, sports a Sony IMX 214 sensor and f/2.0 aperture, so you should get excellent selfies no matter if you’re in the bright outdoors or in a poorly lit bar.
As mentioned, the 5,000mAh battery should get users through a day or two of use. Asus said with 100 percent charge, users can get 6.4 hours of 4K recording before the device dies. So I suppose you can film an entire movie trilogy with the device before needing to charge up.
Not the best processor
Sadly, the phone doesn’t sport a Snapdragon 835 processor, as some early rumors had suggested. Instead, it offers a Snapdragon 625 chip. Users will also find support for recording 4K video, a 5.5-inch 1080p display and more. It sounds like a pretty phenomenal device that’s undercut by a lackluster processor though we’ll reserve judgement until we actually get our hands on the device.
Asus said the device will be available in February.
