Android 7.1 Developer Preview coming to Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X this month

Google just confirmed that it will deploy the Android 7.1 Nougat Developer Preview to several devices later this month. Android 7.1 was first introduced in tandem with the Google Pixel.

Android 7.1 will include platform Daydream VR support (this doesn’t necessarily mean it will work with the device you’re using), support for new app shortcuts, image keyboard support that will allow third-parties to embed new functions inside keyboards and more. Developers will also find support for circular app icons, enhanced wallpaper metadata and the new App shortcuts API.

The update does not, however, include Google Assistant.

Why this matters:

Owners of Nexus devices were left in the cold when Google announced the Google Pixel with Android 7.1. Now we know that it’s coming to the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Pixel C devices, with “other supported devices [coming] by the end of the preview.” We still think Google should have brought Google Assistant into the fold, though.
